The Bodhi Tree is held with such great reverence because it under this very tree that Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment some 2540 years ago and became Shakyamuni Buddha. The present Bodhi Tree is not the original tree but most probably the fifth descendant of the original tree. Some Buddhists consider the Bodhi Tree as the actual Buddha.
