Corbett lies in the foothills of the Himalayas in the upper Terai region of the state of Uttaranchal. At a distance of 115 km from the district headquarters at Nainital, it covers a total area of 1318.54 sq km Corbett Tiger Reserve is the first and one of the finest tiger reserves of India. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, the park was renamed in the year 1957 in honor of the hunter and photographer Major Jim Corbett who had spent major part of his life in this area and contributed in establishment of the this park. The Corbett Park was the first park to be designated as the Project Tiger Reserve in 1973.
