The historians and archaeologists believe that King Asoka has raised around 40 pillars at this place. But at present only one pillar exists in complete form at its original location in the village. It has height of more than 12 m and shows a brilliant Mauryan polish even today despite being open to all exposures. 6 of Ashoka's Edicts issued in the year 244 BC are inscribed on the pillar. The pillar is crowned by a squatting lion but with a missing face, as it was shot a cannon in 1660 AD. The massive stupa is 24 m high with a circumference of nearly 457 m. it is one of the biggest stupas ever built in India.
