Champanagar lies in the district of Bhagalpur 220 km away from Patna in Bihar. It derived its name from plenty of Chmpaka trees that are grown here. Tour of Champanagar would be of interest because Buddha had visited this place several times. The place is an important Buddhist site as Buddha has delivered many sermons here.
Buddha taught the Kandaraka Sutta, the Sonadanda Sutta and several other important discourses at Champanagar. The Kandaraka Sutta is from The Middle Length Discourses and the Sonadanda Sutta is from The Long Discourses.
There was a tank called Gaggara's Lotus Lake in Champanagar famous for the beautiful lotuses that grew in it. A plantation of champaka trees on the banks of the lake was the favorite spot of Buddha. Sarovana Talab is a large water body left of the lake. During early 1900's while cleaning of the lake, several Buddha statues were found. Champanagar is recommended for people on tour of Buddhist Sites in Bihar.
