| Shey is located at the majestic setting of 15 kms south of Leh, a prime Buddhist attraction for global visitors. A 12 Ft. Shakyamuni Buddha's statue decorated in copper is the largest in the region. Built by Deldan Namgyal in 1633, it attracts lots of Buddhist tourists every year. A three storied high statue of Buddha, stone carving and many chortens are scattered around the place making your visit more successful and meaningful. It also comprises of sacrificial offerings as grain, jewels, holy signs and mantras inside it. The Shey Gompa’s upper story is adorned with a number of beautiful wall paintings and thus needs your meaningful exploration.
The Shey Gompa obeys its annual festival with great zeal and enthusiasm on the 30th day of the 1st month of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. Sariputra and Maudgalyayana are the images of Buddha of two main disciplines. Every wall around the Buddha statue is painted with several images, the ultimate attraction of the Shey Gompa. In the front of the Buddha statue there is a huge bowl of wax with a central flame, representing divinity and purity. A library is decked with murals of Buddha figures with his different hand gestures, decorated the lower storey of the Shey Monastery of Leh Ladakh. A palace turned Gompa-the Shey Monastery is also popular for serving Ladakhi Kings. 12 meter gold plated statue of Buddha successfully captures Buddhist Pilgrimage attractions to a large extend.
